HC Deb 30 October 1984 vol 65 cc931-2W
Mr. Cohen

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish the criteria by which the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission provides funds for archaeological projects.

Mr. Waldegrave

Until 1 April 1984 my Department made grants towards the repair of monuments to preserve them for posterity, to secure public access and towards rescue archaeology in advance of development. In all cases the main factors taken into account were the importance of the monument the degree of threat and the availability of funds. It would now be a matter for the Historic Buildings and Monuments Commission for England to change those criteria and, if it wishes, to publish them.
