asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many centilitres they would expect to find in a bottle of wine, and why.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Trade and Industry (Lord Lucas of Chilworth)

Weights and measures legislation requires that packages of all types of wine (including sparkling wine) must contain at least, on average, the amount stated on the label.

In addition, pre-packed still table wine must be made up only in the following prescribed metric sizes: l0cl., 25cl., 35 cl.(2), 37.5cl., 50cl., 70cl.(2), 73 cl.(l), 75cl., 1L., 1.25L.(2), 1.5L., 2L., 3L., 5L.

  2. (2) Until 31st December 1988 only.
