HC Deb 25 October 1984 vol 65 c680W
Sir John Biggs-Davison

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on United Kingdom citizens and passport holders detained and imprisoned in Zimbabwe, giving the length of incarceration in each case and the judicial proceedings brought against them, and the result.

Mr. Rifkind

The British High Commission in Harare has been notified of seven mono-British citizens detained in Zimbabwe. They have been tried in the Zimbabwean courts and five were found guilty, receiving sentences ranging from life to 15 months, although one of the five is detained in the psychiatric wing of the prison hospital. Judgment has not yet been passed on the sixth. The seventh is now detained under the emergency powers regulations.
