Mr. Spearing

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department in which women's prisons education has been partially or wholly withdrawn since 1 January; and if he will state the respective periods and reasons.

Between 1 January and 30 September 1984 education programmes for women and girls took place as planned at Drake Hall, Durham, East Sutton Park, Low Newton, Pucklechurch and Styal, and there were only minimal interruptions to the programmes at Askham Grange and Risley. Interruptions to the programmes at other establishments were caused primarily by shortages of prison officers for supervisory duties, and were as follows:
