HC Deb 24 October 1984 vol 65 c585W
42. Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what assessment he has made of the impact of lean burn engines on atmospheric pollution.

Mr. Nicholas Ridley

The information available to me suggests that the application of the lean burn principle to petrol engines has the potential for reducing carbon monoxide and nitrogen oxide emissions from cars by about 50 per cent. The effect on atmostpheric pollution will depend on the location at which measurements are made, and the significance of other sources.
