§ Mr. MellorDuring 1983, 303 females were recorded as dependent on drugs on reception into prison custody. The number held in custody at any one time is not recorded centrally.
The number of alcoholics in prison custody is not recorded, mainly because of problems of definition.
On 30 June 1984, there were 36 females in prison custody assessed as mentally disordered for the purposes of part II of the Mental Health Act 1983. Of these, 24 were diagnosed as mentally ill.
