HC Deb 30 November 1984 vol 68 c617W
Mr. Alton

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science whether his Department issues any guidelines on the use of animal experiments and dissection as part of the school curriculum; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Dunn

The Department has issued advice on the care and maintenance of living animals in schools; the use of such animals is normally restricted to observation of behaviour and growth and to husbandry. There are educational grounds for the inclusion of a limited amount of dissection, frequently using abattoir material, in biology courses in secondary schools, but the Department has published no guidance on this matter.
