HC Deb 29 November 1984 vol 68 c567W
Dr. Marek

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why the Prosperous Plain area has not been considered as a possible site on St. Helena for an airfield.

Mr. Raison

This location was apparently ruled out in an examination of potential airfield sites by the Civil Aviation Authority in 1973 because of the presence of a diplomatic wireless service station. Its suitability is now being re-examined.

Dr. Marek

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement about present communications to St. Helena as a result of the recent fire on the RMS St. Helena.

Mr. Raison

It is expected that the RMS St. Helena will resume service on a scheduled northbound voyage in mid-December. In the meantime, special arrangements have been made for passengers and for mail booked on the November/December southbound voyage to travel by air to Ascension Island, and onward to St. Helena by an MOD-chartered vessel, the Sir Percivale Another vessel has been chartered to carry necessary supplies, including holiday season requirements.
