HC Deb 29 November 1984 vol 68 cc540-1W
Mr. Tony Banks

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will specify the numbers of male and female unemployed persons, expressed in total and separately, registered for each of the unemployment benefit offices in the Greater London area, at (a) May 1979, (b) the most recent convenient date; and if he will express the change in the totals between (a) and (b) as a percentage increase or decrease.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information for jobcentre areas for the dates requested is available in the House of Commons Library. However, the current figures are not directly comparable with those for 1979, mainly because of the change in the basis of the unemployment count in October 1982.

Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many males aged 45 years and over were unemployed for 12 months and more in May 1979, how many are currently unemployed; if he will give the figures for the west midlands; and what is the percentage of the work force in each case.

Mr. Alan Clark

The information is available in the House of Commons Library. The current figures are not directly comparable with those for 1979, mainly because of the change in the basis of the unemployment count in October 1982.
