HC Deb 29 November 1984 vol 68 c567W
19. Mr. Adley

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what method he uses to assess the state of opinion on constitutional matters amongst the electorate of Northern Ireland; and how often he updates his soundings.

Mr. Hurd

The people of Northern Ireland have regular opportunities at elections to express their views clearly on constitutional matters. The principal means of assessing opinion is to listen to the political parties, with which I keep in close touch, and which according to the strength of their electoral support, best articulate the views of the community.
