HC Deb 28 November 1984 vol 68 cc507-8W
38. Mr. Loyden

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what is his latest estimate of savings resulting from the proposals to abolish the metropolitan county councils and the Greater London council.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

My right hon. Friend's latest estimate can be found in the explanatory and financial memorandum to the Local Government Bill.

Mr. Heddle

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make it his policy, after the abolition of the Greater London council, to publish details of all parcels of land transferred by order under the Green Belt (London and Home Counties) Act 1938.

Mr. Macfarlane

The 1938 Act does not contain powers for the transfer of land by order. The GLC interest in land held under the 1938 Act is to be transferred at abolition by order under the proposed transitional and consequential powers in the Local Government Bill. Individual plots will only be specified where this is necessary.

Dr. Twinn

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment what consultation he has had with the trade unions about the implications for staff affected by his proposals to abolish the Greater London council and the metropolitan county councils.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

I have today written to the chairman of the local government committee of the TUC, renewing my right hon. Friend's earlier invitations to the unions to discuss these matters, and enclosing a detailed paper which sets out the staffing aspects of our proposals.

Copies have been placed in the Library of the House.

75. Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment when he intends publishing the Bill dealing with the proposed abolition of the metropolitan county councils and the Greater London council.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

The Local Government Bill was published on 22 November.
