HC Deb 23 November 1984 vol 68 c291W
Mr. John David Taylor

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what effect his statement on 12 November about the abolition of the £1 note will have on Ulster bank, Northern bank, Bank of Ireland and Allied Irish bank £1 notes issued in Belfast.

Mr. Lawson

The decision to cease issuing the Bank of England £1 note does not alter the position of notes issued by banks in Northern Ireland, on which decisions are a matter for the banks concerned.

Mr. Watson

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many £1 notes were issued in 1983.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Approximately 660 million.

Mr. Skeet

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer why he is not prepared to consider a plastic £1 note, similar to that used in the Isle of Man.

Mr. Ian Stewart

Plastic notes are too easily forged and therefore unsuitable for a country with a large currency circulation.
