HC Deb 23 November 1984 vol 68 cc330-1W
Mr. Grylls

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will ask the European Economic Community Commission to set the newsprint quota for the future at a level of 750,000 tonnes or above.

Mr. Channon

It will be for the EC Council of Ministers to agree to the future level of the annual duty-free quota for imports of newsprint. The quota level will depend on the outcome of negotiations with Canada following the adoption by the GATT council of the report of a disputes settlement panel. Within the Community, the United Kingdom will continue to press for a future quota which adequately reflects the import needs of United Kingdom newsprint users.
