HC Deb 23 November 1984 vol 68 c287W
Mr. Leighton

asked the Prime Minister how much public money is at risk in the rescue of Johnson Matthey bank.

The Prime Minister

Any losses which the Bank of England may incur as a result of the Johnson Matthey bankers rescue will be met on the governor's authority from the resources of the banking department of the Bank of England. The extent to which contingent liabilities on the banking department may be called is a matter for the Bank of England to judge.
