HC Deb 21 November 1984 vol 68 c161W
Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement outlining the policy of Her Majesty's Government on the privatising of passenger rail services.

Mr. David Mitchell

We have told BR that we shall welcome proposals from it for more private sector finance and participation in the development of stations and railway services.

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received from Messrs. Brengreen Holdings Ltd. and its associates about the privatising of the Fenchurch street to Shoeburyness line; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

Brengreen has told me that it has decided to shelve the project for the time being because in its view the information provided by BR is insufficient.

Mr. Teddy Taylor

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what steps he has taken to ensure that British Rail provides firms intending to promote privatisation schemes with the information which they require to draw up detailed bids and tenders; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. David Mitchell

It is for the board to decide how to respond to such requests in the light of the competing demands on senior management time.
