HC Deb 21 November 1984 vol 68 c162W
Mr. Terlezki

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will increase the number of Customs officers commensurately with the increase in passengers coming through customs.

Mr. Hayhoe

Relating increases in the number of Customs officers directly to the number of passengers would not be the most effective response to the threat of increased smuggling, which is what I think my hon. Friend has in mind, however, this year the Government have made available an additional 60 posts for the control of passengers and freight and next year 100 new posts have been allocated for use in areas where they are most likely to yield results, for example by increasing Customs intelligence efforts and improving selective controls.
