asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is (a) the weekly basic cost of treating a patient in a National Health Service hospital and (b) the weekly basic cost of treatment in a National Health Service specialist alcoholism treatment unit.

Information on the cost of specialist alcoholism treatment units is not collected centrally. In 1982–83 the average cost per inpatient week of psychiatric (mental illness) hospitals in England, in which such units are usually situated, was £217.00. The 1982–83 weekly inpatient costs in other types of hospital were as follows:
