HC Deb 20 November 1984 vol 68 cc121-2W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how the number of graduates from the state approved schools of chiropody compares with the target figures listed in the answers of 23 May 1980, Official Report, column 464, and 3 June 1980, Official Report, column 621.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The answers to which my hon. Friend refers looked forward to a target increase of 50 per cent. over the 1978 output level. This was reached in 1983 when the United Kingdom output of chiropody students was 52 per cent. higher than in 1978.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many students graduated from each of the state approved schools of chiropody in 1982 and 1983.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The number of students who graduated from each school was as follows:

1982 1983
ENGLAND
Chelsea School of Chiropody 44 51
London Foot Hospital 24 26
Birmingham School of Chiropody 23 25
School of Chiropody, Dunham 16 19
School of Chiropody, Huddersfield 15 16
School of Chiropody, Plymouth 15
Northern College of Chiropody 61 66
The Sussex School of Chiropody
SCOTLAND
Edinburgh Foot Clinic and School of Chiropody 15 18
Glasgow School of Chiropody 40 34
WALES
Cardiff School of Chiropody 27 25
NORTHERN IRELAND
School of Chiropody, Belfast 11 19
Total 276 314

The first intake of the Plymouth school took its final examination in 1983 and that of the Sussex School in 1984.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what were the average numbers of patients awaiting chiropody treatment through the National Health Service in each of the last four years; and what was the average time of waiting in each of those years.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

We do not collect this information centrally. However, we know that the number of patients treated by chiropodists through the National Health Service in England rose by about 11 per cent. between 1980 and 1983.
