asked the Secretary of State for Employment what are the numbers of people employed in manufacturing industry at the present time; and how this figure compares with this month in 1979.

The latest estimate is for Great Britain for September 1984 when the number of employees in employment in manufacturing industries was 5,515,000. The corresponding number in September 1979 was 7,129,000.
