HC Deb 19 November 1984 vol 68 c14W
Mr. Terry Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department whether there are any restrictions on the clothes which may be worn by men on remand in Winson Green prison.

Mr. Mellor

The prison rules provide that an unconvicted prisoner may wear his own clothing if it is suitable, tidy and clean. Convicted but unsentenced prisoners on remand are required to wear prison clothing, and so are unconvicted prisoners who do not have suitable clothing of their own. These provisions are followed at Birmingham prison. If the hon. Member has a particular case in mind, I should be glad to look into it.

Mr. Terry Davis

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department why Mr. Mohammed Shafi Malik was not allowed to visit Mr. Raja, who is on remand at Willson Green prison on 31 October.

Mr. Mellor

Mr. Malik's name was accidentally omitted from the list of Mr. Raja's approved visitors maintained at the prison gate lodge and he was not, therefore, admitted to the prison. Apologies have been made to Mr. Malik and Mr. Raja, and the list of approved visitors to Mr. Raja has been brought up to date.
