asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is his latest information on the number of social workers employed by Welsh local authorities and the amount of Welsh Office grants to voluntary organisations involved in social care; and how these figures compare with those in 1979.

Mr. Wyn Roberts

Social work staff including trainees and welfare assistants numbered 1,249 in September 1979 and 1,418 in September 1983. The whole-time equivalents were 1,202 and 1,359, respectively.

Grant aid to voluntary organisations was £1.53 million in 1983–84 compared with £538,000 in 1979–80.
