HC Deb 13 November 1984 vol 67 cc185-6W
Mr. Waller

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will seek to amend the General Rating Act 1967 to provide the same exemption for privately run non-profit making railways as applies to rail services in the public sector.

Mr. Waldegrave

No. We included provisions in the Rates Act 1984 which will enable us to bring the British Railways Board, London Regional Transport and British Waterways Board into rating by means of statutory formulae. Meanwhile, these boards continue to make payments in lieu of rates, as required by section 32 of the General Rate Act 1967.
