HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 c110W
63. Mr. Higgins

asked the Secretary of State for Transport why zig-zag lines indicating that parking is prohibited ahead of pedestrian crossings are not also used ahead of traffic lights.

Mr. Ridley

The zig-zag lines at zebra crossings prohibit overtaking as well as parking. It would not be right to prohibit overtaking on the approaches to a junction controlled by traffic lights. Parking prohibitions on the approaches to traffic lights can be indicated by the use of yellow lines.
