HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 c116W
Mr. Ron Davies

asked the Secretary of State for Wales if, in relation to the storage of surplus EEC foodstuffs in Wales, he will indicate (a) the nature of the commodities involved, (b) the total volume or quantity in each case,(c) the total value according to the latest prices in each case, (d) total floor space occupied in each case, (e) the cost of providing rental and/or rates payable in each case, and (f) the original purchase costs in each case providing the information according to location in Wales; what was the position with regard to each of the above categories of information (i) one year ago and (ii) two years ago; and if he will estimate how each category is expected to change in the next year.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The information requested in(a), (b) and (c) is as follow at 30 September 1984:

(a) Commodity (b) Quantity (Tonnes) (c) Value £ million
Skimmed Milk Powder 22,263 22.85
Butter 14,772 28.50
Beef 475 1.32

The information requested at (d) is not available, that at (e) is commercially confidential and the information sought at (f), (i) and (ii) could be obtained only at disproportionate cost. It is not possible to give a reasonable estimate of the storage position in Wales over the next year. Stocks will fluctuate as a result of offer levels determined by market forces, sales controlled by Commission decisions, and availability and cost of storage space.
