HC Deb 12 November 1984 vol 67 c101W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many doctors were employed in the National Health Service in the Province at the latest date; what were the figures for June 1979; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Chris Patten

The information is as follows:—

  • September 1984—1,880
  • June 1979–1,730

These figures include doctors working in the hospital service and in community health and community medicine and some general practitioners who undertake part-time community health or hospital work. General practitioners are independent contractors and therefore are not included in these figures unless they also hold part-time hospital or community health appointments.

Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many doctors were unemployed in the Province at the latest available date: and what the comparable figures were for June 1979.

Mr. Chris Patten

The information requested is not available.
