HC Deb 25 May 1984 vol 60 cc586-7W
Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the total cost of the police presence at the polytechnic of North London at the Kentish town site.

Mr. Hurd

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis tells me that very little overtime has been incurred in the policing of the disorders at the polytechnic. The additional cost to public funds is therefore minimal.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many police were deployed on 17 May and 22 May at the Polytechnic of North London, Kentish town building.

Mr. Hurd

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis tells me that some 250 officers were deployed on each occasion.

Mr. Corbyn

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many people were arrested at the polytechnic of North London on 17 and 22 May; and what charges have been preferred against them.

Mr. Hurd

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis tells me that on 17 May, following an altercation between two journalists outside the polytechnic, one was arrested and charged with the use of threatening behaviour conducive to a breach of the peace. On 22 May, eight people were arrested; all were charged with the use of threatening behaviour and some with the offence of obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duty.
