HC Deb 24 May 1984 vol 60 c539W
1984. Mr. Proctor

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will list in the Official Report the United Kingdom's total working population in (a) 1964, (b) 1969, (c) 1974, (d) 1979 and (e)

Mr. Alan Clark

The following table gives, for June 1964, June 1969, June 1974, June 1979 and December 1983—the latest available—the total working population

Registered unemployed Unemployed claimants Unfilled vacancies
at jobcentres at career offices
April 1979 4,265 1,364 392
April 1980 4,476 561 139
April 1981 8,361 241 32
April 1982 7,034 364 30
October 1982 11,972 10,635 255 29
April 1983 10,945 140 35
April 1984 10,924 271 69

Vacancies notified to jobcentres are estimated to be about one third of all vacancies in the country as a whole. Because of possible duplication, the figures for jobcentres and careers offices should not be added together. The number of vacancies remaining unfilled at a particular date takes no account of the flow of vacancies being notified, filled or withdrawn which would reflect activity more closely. For example, during the 12-month period to December 1983, the number of people placed in jobs by the Walthamstow jobcentre was 4,124. It is estimated that, nationally, the public employment service accounts for about one in four of all placings in the country as a whole.

Mr. Deakins

asked the Secretary of State for Employment how many people on youth training schemes in Walthamstow have left them to take up permanent employment.
