HC Deb 24 May 1984 vol 60 c473W
Mr. Winnick

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what recent reports he has received concerning illegal activities carried out by staff at the South African embassy in London; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Brittan

I naturally study closely any reports of such activity. I am determined that no diplomatic mission in this country should be used as a base for illegal activities, and, as successive Governments have made clear, specific allegations of illegal or improper activity on behalf of the South Africans are thoroughly investigated. Appropriate action is taken if firm evidence of illegal activities comes to light. I keep the situation under close review.
