asked the Secretary of State for Social Services for what period or periods prescription charge exemption certificates are granted.

Mr. John Patten

The following is the information:

  1. 1. Holders of supplementary benefit and family income supplement order books: throughout the currency of the claim to the benefit.
  2. 2. All others qualifying on low-income grounds: for a maximum of one year.
  3. 3. Individuals suffering from specified medical conditions: for five years.
  4. 4. Pregnant women: for the period ending one year after the expected date of confinement.
  5. 5. Women who have had a baby within the preceding year but had not obtained a certificate while pregnant: for the period ending one year after the date of confinement.
  6. 6. War or service pensioners: until the holder reaches state retirement age.
