HC Deb 22 May 1984 vol 60 c426W
Mrs. Beckett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services which bodies will be invited to submit oral and written evidence to his benefit reviews.

Dr. Boyson

A wide range of organisations and representative bodies have already been sent direct invitations to submit written evidence to the reviews. Advertisements are appearing in the press inviting views more generally. The inquiry into provision for retirement has already held oral sessions on the portability of pensions. It will be for the leaders of each review to settle arrangements for further oral evidence.

Mrs. Beckett

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what are the criteria by which the members of his reviews of benefits were appointed;

(2) what bodies were asked to, or did, suggest names for his reviews of benefits.

Dr. Boyson

The members of the review teams were selected for their personal qualities not as representatives of particular interests. Accordingly, outside bodies were not approached to suggest names, although offers of nominations were received from various quarters.
