  1. 1. The Department of Industry was combined with the Department of Trade to form the Department of Trade and Industry in June 1983.
  2. 2. The expenditure on research and development is as defined by the OECD guidelines for surveys of research and development — the Frascati manual. This excludes the Department's technology transfer activities but includes 'launch aid' under the Civil Aviation Act 1949.
