§ Mr. Macleanasked the Secretary of State for Social Services what action has been taken on the recommendations of the supplies information working party that computer-based information systems be introduced to improve stock control, identify and prevent procurement of obsolete stock and identify excessive usage; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Kenneth ClarkeWe have supported the development by the National Health Service of a comprehensive supplies information system based on the recommendations of the supplies information working party. The first phase of this computer based system was made available nationally to health authorities in November 1983. Regions have already made considerable progress in introducing the system. The full system will be available by the end of this year. We expect very substantial savings to be made for the benefit of patient care in the service by the reduction of unnecessary levels of stock holding and improved bargaining for future stocks. I recently presented the first prize in theHealth and Social Services Journal annual management award to the officers responsible for devising this system.
