HC Deb 21 May 1984 vol 60 c355W
Mr. Maclean

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what discussions he has had with the Comptroller and Auditor General regarding the conclusion in his report on the National Health Service accounts for the year ended 31 March 1983 that there is no evidence of a material understatement of losses.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The reports of the statutory auditors on their audit of the accounts of health authorities are examined by the Comptroller and Auditor General. I have noted his conclusions and his reference to the action currently in hand by our Department. My hon. Friend will have noted the conclusions of the Committee of Public Accounts in its Sixteenth report for the Session 1983–84 (HC 113), paragraphs 48–51, to which a reply will be given by Treasury minute in due course.
