HC Deb 21 May 1984 vol 60 cc347-9W
Mr. Steen

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he proposes to take to assist dairy farmers with fewer than 100 cows and whose sole livelihood is in milk; if he will apply part of the 2.5 per cent. quota reserve specifically to assist such farmers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. MacGregor

We are consulting urgently the various interests concerned about the detailed arrangements for special cases. We will be making a statement when decisions have been taken.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what information he has

Community; and what was the total catch in the United Kingdom for each of these species of fish in 1973, 1978, 1981, 1982 and 1983.

Mr. MacGregor

The national quota for 1984 for each of the seven main edible species (including both joint stocks and stocks under the Community's autonomous control) and the total catch by United Kingdom vessels in the years referred to are set out in the following tables:

as to the terms of the scheme currently being introduced by the Federal Republic of Germany to assist dairy farmers; how many farmers are expected to benefit; what estimate he has made of the cost; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. MacGregor

I shall reply to my hon. Friend as soon as possible.

Mr. Maclean

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether the representations referred to in the reply given to the hon. Member for Penrith and The Border on 14 May included representations from the National Farmers Union; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. MacGregor

Some NFU branches have made representations suggesting that assistance should be provided to dairy producers who wish to go out of production. We are considering these representations.
