HC Deb 21 May 1984 vol 60 c319W
Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many convictions there have been in each year since 1974 of adult males having unlawful sexual intercourse with (a) girls under 14 years of age and (b) girls aged between 14 and 16 years.

Mr. Mellor

The available information relates to offences of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 or a girl under 16 and is published annually in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables"—for magistrates' courts in table S1.1(E), and for the Crown court in table S2.1(E), of supplementary tables, volumes 1 and 2 respectively, for 1982. Information for 1983 is not yet available.

Mr. Nicholas Winterton

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) how many cases have been investigated in the Metropolitan police area by the police in each of the years since 1974 of situations where adult males have been suspected of but not charged with having unlawful sexual intercourse with girls under 16 years of age;

(2) if he will call for a report from each chief constable as to the number of cases that have been investigated in their area by the police in each of the years since 1974 of situations where adult males have been suspected of, but not charged with, having unlawful sexual intercourse with girls under 16 years of age.

Mr. Hurd

The readily available information on suspects not charged with an offence refers to those given formal cautions by the police, and is published annually, by offence group, in "Criminal Statistics, England and Wales, Supplementary Tables" — in table S4.11 of Volume 4 for 1982. Any further information on adult males, who have been suspected of, but not charged with, having unlawful sexual intercourse with girls under 16 years of age could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
