HC Deb 21 May 1984 vol 60 c364W
Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if his Department has any plans to monitor the effectiveness of local recall schemes for cervical screening.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

No. Health authorities are responsible for determining the most suitable local recall arrangements and they should monitor the effectiveness of their own cervical screening programme. The draft circular I referred to in my reply of 17 May to my hon. Friend the Member for Staffordshire Moorlands (Mr. Knox) at column259 reminds health authorities of this responsibility.

Mr. Meadowcroft

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what guidelines were issued to local health authorities when the responsibility for recall schemes for cervical screening was transferred to them.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

A copy of the guidance circular issued in 1981 (HC(81)14) is in the Library.
