HL Deb 18 May 1984 vol 451 c1666WA
Lord Stoddart of Swindon

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What is the best estimate for the total cost of the Joint European Torus Project at Culham?

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Energy (The Earl of Avon)

The Joint European Torus Project started in 1978 and is scheduled for completion in 1990. The best available cost estimate, in cash terms, is some £600 million. The figure of £445 million given to the House on 8th May was derived from the constant price figure for the project costs in 1977 and 1981 money terms.
