HC Deb 17 May 1984 vol 60 c213W
53. Mr. Nicholas Baker

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he is satisfied with the level of police recruitment and the numbers of police in England and Wales.

Mr. Hurd

On 31 March 1984, the strength of the police service in England and Wales was 121,053—an increase of 9,560 over May 1979. All forces remain at, or very close to, their authorised establishments and there is no shortage of good quality recruits to fill vacancies caused by retirements and resignations. This is satisfactory.
