HC Deb 17 May 1984 vol 60 cc218-9W
Mr. Corbett

asked the Secretary of State for Transport for what purpose manned and unmarked caravans were parked off the hard shoulders on the northbound and southbound carriageways of the M1 a few yards north of junction 9 at about 3 pm on Saturday 12 May; how long they were parked there and for what purpose; and in what form and when the information collected will be published.

Mrs. Chalker

This site is one of a number used for a continuing national transport census and it was being used for that purpose at the time referred to by the hon. Member. Traffic counts are usually spread over one week in each month. On this occasion the caravans were there from 11 to 16 May. The information collected is published quarterly in "Statistics Bulletin Traffic in Great Britain" and also appears annually in the publication "Transport Statistics Great Britain". Copies of both publications are placed in the Library of the House. The next quarterly bulletin will appear in June and the annual publication in the late autumn.
