HC Deb 17 May 1984 vol 60 cc237-8W
Mr. Deakins

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the amount of investment by the United Kingdom non-public sector in 1979 in the United Kingdom, in other countries and in total; and what are the comparable figures for the latest year for which figures are available.

Mr. Peter Rees

The net acquisition of fixed assets by the United Kingdom private sector was £24.0 billion in 1979 and £32.2 billion in 1983. Overseas investment by the United Kingdom private sector, which covers net financial flows for all investment purposes amounted to £6.8 billion in 1979 and £10.9 billion in 1983. Because the coverage of overseas investment is considerably wider than that of investment in the United Kingdom it is not appropriate to add the two sets of figures together to produce a figure for total investment.
