HC Deb 16 May 1984 vol 60 cc195-6W
32. Mr. Strang

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how many young people were unemployed in the Edinburgh travel-to-work area on the latest available date; and what was the comparable figure five years ago.

Mr. Allan Stewart

At 12 January 1984, the latest date for which information is available, there were 3,353 and 33,669 unemployed claimants aged under 18 years in the Edinburgh travel-to-work area and Scotland respectively. At 11 January 1979 the number of unemployed registrants in this age group totalled 1,745 for the Edinburgh travel-to-work area and 22,373 for Scotland. The figures are not directly comparable owing to the change in October 1982 to a claimant based unemployment count.
