How many applications for grant have been made to date by (a) the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, and (b) county trusts for nature conservation to the National Heritage Memorial Fund, and whether they will state:
- (i) how many of these were successful in attracting grant;
- (ii) what grant, and what percentage of the overall purchase cost, was given by the fund as a result of each successful application; and
- (iii) what sum was given as an endowment by the fund to assist the organisation to run the land or property as a result of each successful application.
§ Lord SkelmersdaleI understand from the National Heritage Memorial Fund that up to 2nd May 1984 the RSPB have made 10 formal applications for grant to the National Heritage Memorial Fund, of which six have been successful and five have already been paid. During the same period, 35 formal applications to the fund have been made by local trusts for nature conservation (which in several cases operate in areas larger than a single county), of which 22 have been successful and 20 grants have already been paid. All the grants have been offered solely in respect of the purchase of sites. The fund has also on occasions offered grant-aid in support of proposed purchases of land by nature conservation organisations but they 1399WA were not taken up because the organisations' efforts were not successful.
