asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what was the number of Customs officers specialising in the prevention of drug trafficking in 1979; and what is the number in 1984.

The number of specialist Customs officers engaged exclusively in the investigation and prevention of drug trafficking was 121 in 1979 and is 196 in 1984. In addition, a further 52 specialist staff were so engaged as part of their duties in 1979, and 85 in 1984.
