HC Deb 15 May 1984 vol 60 cc109-10W
Mr. Holt

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he can give the total yield of the on-course betting duty on horseracing and greyhound racing, respectively, for the past three years; and what has been the approximate cost of collection in each case.

Mr. Hayhoe

Net receipts of betting duty charged on all on-course bets in the last three years were:

£ million
1981 13.2
1982 14.2
1983 13.8

Precise information of the division between horseracing and greyhound racing is not available, but it is estimated that a little under half the yield was from greyhound racing.

The cost of administering the duty on on-course betting cannot be isolated from the cost of administering all the betting and gaming duties, which was 1p per pound of revenue in the financial years 1980–81 and 1981–82 and 0.9p per pound in 1982–83.
