HC Deb 15 May 1984 vol 60 c96W
Mr. Dubs

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department (1) what is the purpose of the provision of £500,000 in his estimates for the maintenance of the Alderney breakwater;

(2) if he will list all items of expenditure under the heading of "Channel Islands services" since 1979 for which money has been provided by Parliament.

Mr. Mellor

The Alderney breakwater was built by the United Kingdom Government in the last century to shelter the Fleet. As a consequence, the existing harbour silted up and the breakwater is maintained today to preserve what is now the only commercial harbour on the island. This maintenance expenditure, to which the Alderney authorities make a contribution, is the only money provided by Parliament for Channel Islands services.
