HC Deb 14 May 1984 vol 60 cc18-9W
Mr. Marlow

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the average weekly rate of pay of each grade of school teacher based on (a) a 52-week year, (b) the number of weeks worked plus six weeks, (c) the number of weeks worked plus four weeks and (d) the number of weeks worked.

Sir Keith Joseph

The length of a teacher's working year is not specified by regulation or national agreement, nor does the Department collect information on current practice. However, maintained schools are required to open for at least 190 days a year. Also, certain teachers undertake out-of-term work in connection with sport, travel, examination results and placement for further study. A 38-week year is therefore a minimum assumption. Subject to that qualification, the information requested is as follows:

Average salary per week* on the assumption of a working year of
(a) (b) (c) (d)
52 weeks 44 weeks 42 weeks 38 weeks
Headteacher 242 286 300 332
Deputy 215 254 266 294
Senior teacher 244 288 302 333
Scale 4 teacher 222 262 275 304
Scale 3 teacher 193 228 238 264
Scale 2 teacher 164 193 202 224
Scale 1 teacher 139 164 172 190

* Gross figures, excluding allowances but including teachers' pension contributions, based on April 1983 salary scales and March 1983 teacher numbers for full-time teachers in maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools in England and Wales.
