HC Deb 09 May 1984 vol 59 c407W
Mr.Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment how many appeals were made to him under the Town and Country Planning Acts in the last 12 months for which figures are available; and how many appeals he upheld in the last 12 months for which figures are available.

Mr.Macfarlane

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Bury, South (Mr. Sumberg) on 7 March at c. 846. In 1983, 13,699 appeals were received by my Department and 11,221 were determined, of these 3,633 were allowed.

Mr.Chapman

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment on how many occasions he awarded costs against the planning authority and the applicant, respectively, in planning appeals determined by him or his inspectors during the last 12 months for which figures are available.

Mr.Macfarlane

During 1983 I made 51 awards of costs against local planning authorities and 18 awards against appellants. Some of the appeals concerned were determined before the beginning of 1983.
