§ Mr. Wainwrightasked the Secretary of State for Social Services by what sum the maternity grant would have to be increased in order to restore it to its 1979 level of purchasing power; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. NewtonOn the basis of the movement of the general index of retail prices up to March 1984 the grant would have to be increased from £25 to £36.30 to restore its 1979 purchasing power. The maternity grant is intended only as a contribution towards the expenses of having a baby. We are aware that it has lost its purchasing power but, like previous Governments, we have taken the view that priority must be given to the continuing weekly benefits which are intended to cover day-to-day living expenses.
