HC Deb 08 May 1984 vol 59 cc337-8W
Mr. Skinner

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what percentage of the total work force consists of (a) part-time female workers and (b) part-time male workers.

Mr. Alan Clark

Women working part-time comprised about 17.5 per cent. of the employed labour force in December 1983. Estimates of the number of men working part-time are available only from censuses of employment, the latest of which relates to September 1981, when they comprised 3 per cent. of the employed labour force.

Mr. Leighton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give the numbers of long-term unemployed categorised by length of unemployment broken down by age groups.

Mr. Alan Clark

Information on the age and duration of unemployment is available quarterly with the latest figures relating to January 1984. The figures for the United Kingdom are published in table 2.6 in the "Labour Market Data" section of the March 1984 issue of "Employment Gazette", a copy of which is in the Library.

Mr. Leighton

asked the Secretary of State for Employment if he will give the size and percentage of youth unemployment, adult unemployment and long term unemployment, respectively, in East Ham and the London borough of Newham in March 1979 and March 1984.

Mr. Alan Clark

Information on the age and duration of unemployment is available quarterly with the latest figures relating to January 1984. The following table gives, for the categories specified, the number of unemployed claimants in January 1984 in the East Ham jobcentre area and the East Ham, Plaistow and Stratford jobcentre areas, which correspond closely to the London borough of Newham. It also gives the number of registered unemployed in January 1979, together with the figures on both bases for October 1982. Percentage rates of unemployment are not calculated for areas within Greater London.
