asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what the cost to the National Health Service pay bill in 1984–85 would be of each additional percentage point increase in pay for nurses, midwives and health visitors.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

A 1 per cent. increase in pay in 1984–85 for nurses, midwives and health visitors employed by health authorities in England would cost about £28.5 million.
